Market Spotlight: Randgold Resources
IRJ has been watching gold powerhouse Randgold Resources since September, when George Media Editor Sara Kopamees had the opportunity to listen to CEO Mark Bristow’s address at the September 18 opening of the TSX.
An invitation recently came to the George Media offices to attend Bristow’s latest presentation in Toronto, and the IRJ staff hopes the company will visit again soon. Randgold looks to be the biggest African-focused gold producer for the next five years.
Randgold Resources has primary listings on the London Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Major discoveries for the company, to date, include the 7.5 million ounce Morila deposit in southern Mali, the 7+ million ounce Yalea deposit at Loulo in western Mali, and the 4+ million ounce Tongon deposit in the Côte d’Ivoire. Since October, 2000, the self-financed Morila mine has produced more than 5 million ounces of gold and distributed more than US$1.3 billion to stakeholders. Randgold also built and financed the Loulo project, which started as two open pit mines in November of 2005.
The prodigious company has since developed a mine at the Yalea deposit, and a second underground operation is planned for the Gara deposit, according to the company website. First gold production from the company’s new Tongon project is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2010.
Randgold was founded on Bristow’s pioneering exploration work in West Africa. He has subsequently led the company’s growth through the discovery and development of world-class assets, and turned Randgold into a major gold mining business with a market capitalisation of more than US$3.5 billion.
Bristow is known in the investment community to be able to predict the ebbs and flows of the price of gold, and tends to candidly share his anecdotes and experiences working in Africa’s gold market freely to eager audiences.
Adding to his credit, Bristow also firmly believes in sustainability in the mining industry in West Africa. A geologist with a PhD from Natal University, he has been a board member at a number of global mining companies.
Stay tuned for more updates on Randgold Resources’ gold exploration and development in Africa, as IRJ continues to follow this company into 2010.
