Moore Process Controls
South Africa’s Process Automation and Optimization Experts
Today, Moore Process Controls in South Africa may be hailed as the South African compressor control experts, but that’s not to say the small company which was founded back in 1984 hasn’t lost some of that early ethos. Going global in its provision of process automation and optimisation solutions, particularly for the oil and gas industry, hasn’t stopped this company from retaining that personal touch still present in its big business partnerships today. Going from its inception as a small South African process automation company, representing Moore Products in the USA, to offering competitive solutions on a global scale surely wasn’t easy. But what exactly does it take to go the distance? IRJ spoke with Kevin Hore, Moore’s Managing Director, to find out.
Making more of Moore
Hore says that put simply; Moore has continually grown since its founding and is now spread out between its Head Office and two offices in South Africa and one in Houston, Texas, USA. The company undertakes projects in the Oil and Gas industry on a global scale, and locally in the Petrochemical, Chemical, Mining, Base Metals, Power, and Food and Beverage Industries.
“The company has always been part of the process automation industry focusing on service delivery with fierce loyalty to our clients and suppliers,” Hore says.
“In the early days we developed specialised compressor anti-surge control algorithms and today we are the South African compressor control experts. Especially in terms of load sharing on multiple units and optimising energy usage.”
Moore is right to be quietly confident about the solutions it offers. Hore explains that around five years ago the company took on the Matrikon agency and developed its own optimisation and predictive maintenance solutions that he says they believe, “are amongst the best in the world.”
“The system combines vibration and process data and applies higher order statistics and thermodynamics to give advanced notifications of performance degradation with online root cause analyses,” Hore explains.
“It’s pretty impressive!”
A number of industry players certainly seem to agree. Moore has already scooped the award for the Siemens top integrator company four times, and picked up another award for the Frost and Sullivan best integrator in 2009. Today the company shows no signs of slowing, as it continues to provide a wide range of compressor control solutions to numerous, sometimes demanding, industries.
Moore’s partnerships, people and promise
If we’re going to talk demanding industries, Moore’s successes in oil and gas are a great place to start. As Hore points out, supplying solutions throughout Africa, Brazil, Europe and Australia is no mean feat for a South African process automation and optimization solutions company.
“Two projects that were a huge success are the offshore Floating Production and Storage Operations (FPSO) offshore Angola,” he says.
“The two vessels, at the time, were our largest Siemens system implementations and both were brought in on time for first oil.”
Working with Siemens is something of a trend for this company, who currently rank number one out of the 13 Siemens certified safety specialist companies in the entire world. In fact, when it comes to company achievements, the global major makes another appearance.
“Gearing up for the Siemens system is another milestone and working with Siemens has brought us a long way and our growth would not have been possible without the close Siemens business relationship,” Hore says.
“Obtaining our ISO certification is definitely one of them [also].”
Hore keenly highlights the role of the entire unified Moore team in such projects, saying that no one employee supersedes another and noting the company’s commitment to being BEE compliant as is required in South Africa.
“The company works as a team and each part of the project requires multiple inputs from various specialists,” he says.
“Without everyone contributing 100 per cent all the time the company would not be where it is today.”
Today the question for Moore is really more of a case of where is left in the world for the company to go tomorrow?
Moore tomorrow
A glance over Moore’s industry-spread beyond oil and gas is impressive. The company’s other chosen industries in which it excels include:
- DCS and PLC turnkey projects including process automation and safety shut down systems
- Rotating equipment, anti-surge, safety, optimisation and predictive maintenance systems
- Batch systems and batch optimisation systems
- Process optimisation and alarm management
- Production management
- OPC and data transfer
- Field instrumentation supply and installation
- System and application training courses
- System Maintenance and upgrades
Hore rates customer focus, dedicated engineers and tight control on quality amongst the factors which characterise Moore’s strength in today’s market.
“But it’s also the ability to add specialist services and several specialised layers to a system that makes us stand out — from field instrumentation right through to predictive maintenance systems — that’s our strength,” he explains.
“The company has been expanding since 2001 and has actually doubled in size in the last five years.
“Our focus at the moment is to continually improve our existing offerings,” Hore says.
“We opened an office in Houston, Texas, at the end of last year to be closer to our clients overseas. About 50 per cent of our company’s revenues are in oil and gas so it makes sense to be closer to the action.”
Hore is admirably cautious when it comes to the subject of diversification, for services or locations, saying that it “needs to be carefully approached.”
“We are actively researching the market and looking for new developments that could add value to our offering but these must be consistent with our own core strengths. I would rather improve what we have than look at new ventures where our strengths become weaknesses,” he explains.
This characterises Moore perfectly. The company has enjoyed exponential growth, it is true, however this has never come at the cost of quality for its clients. Instead, Hore says, the focus now falls on improving its current rotating equipment offering and internal optimisation through a unique set of tools which the company has developed in-house to assist them.
“Moore is dedicated to exceeding clients’ expectations and offering the very best service available — we live and breathe that every day,” he says.
“With the ever increasing competition out there I believe that will be a core strength that will continue to make us shine.”
Now that is what it really takes to be the South African compressor control experts and an exemplary process automation and optimization solutions provider.
