Koza Gold
The highest standard of gold development
Koza Gold Operations Company is a Turkish company formed by 100 per cent Turkish capital to explore and operate gold mines in the country. In March 2005, KOZA Davetiye Magaza Isletmeleri ve Ihracat A.S. and Koza Ipek Holding A.S. acquired all the shares of Normandy Madencilik A.S. from Newmont Mining Corporation Limited, thus becoming first Turkish company in the history of Republic of Turkey to realize gold production.
The company’s Ovacik Gold Mine situated at Bergama, Izmir, has been a key factor in turning the country’s gold potential into economical gain. It is the first gold mine operated in the Republic of Turkey. Production, which currently continues at Ovacik (Bergama/Izmir), Havran, Kucukdere (Balikesir) and Mastra (Gumushane) mines, will be increased by the ore deposits at Kaymaz/Eskisehir—which is in developing stage. Mine deposits at Agean and East Anatolian Regions will commence in near future.
The goal of the company (which has mineral exploration programs throughout the country) is to become a key gold producer, and thereby contribute to developing gold mining and Turkish economy by employing the best available high environmental standards and establishing mutual trust with the local people, and respecting their values.
Ovacik Gold Mine
Koza Gold’s Ovacik Gold Mine is located 100 km north of Izmir-Western Anatolia, and is 12 km west of Bergama and 20 km east of Dikili. Ovacik gold reserves were discovered by the Eurogold Mining Company in 1989 following its exploration works carried out in the Aegean region. Up until then, there had been no gold reserves found in Turkey, which would have been economical to put into operations. The Ovacik ore body consists of two economical quartz veins formed as epithermal in andesitic volcanic rocks. Gold is found among the fractures in quartz grain as free grains with an average size of 0.005mm (5 micron) and in lesser quantity of gold-silver compound (electrum). Sulphurous mineral is almost non existent in the ore. Tests revealed that both ore and side rocks had no potential to produce acid and feature a high acid buffering (alkali). Ovacik ore, which is extremely clear of heavy metal, contains lower metal quality than allowed to be in agricultural soil.
The Mastra Gold Mine, and Havran operations
The company’s Mastra Gold Mine is situated 22km northwest of Gumushane and northeast of Mastra (Demirkaynak) village, and south of East Pontyd Tecnotic band.
Koza Gold’s Havran operation has no chemical plant and is only operated with open pit and excavation activities. As the result of the activities started in November 2006, 11.000 m³ of ore was produced at Havran-Kucukdere and 50.000 tones of ore were transported to be processed at the Ovacik Plant. Currently, the roads used in production are surfaced with asphalt to prevent dust formation. It is planned to produce 850.000 tones of ore in licensed areas of Havran Open Pit Operations.
The Kaymaz Gold Project
The Kaymaz Gold Project is situated within the boundaries of Town of Sivrihisar in Eskisehir Province. All necessary rights were purchased from Tuprag Metal Mining in 2005. Sampling, mapping, trench and drilling activities and reserve calculations were completed in the area.
Kaymaz region is in Izmir-Ankara zone. Oceanic limestone, schist and serpentinites forming basic rocks and tertiary aged intrusive cross-cutting mélanges are found in the region. Neogene aged sediments and quaternary alluvium is the youngest units. Mineralization is related with silisified limestone serpentinit and intrusive. Mineralization developed depending upon silification and breccias contacted to older aged rock with more intrusive, serpentinites have higher grade. Small-scaled copper mineralization is also observed in the region associated with skarn.
Tuprag Metal Mining has completed total of 204 drilling in the region and total resources were calculated to be 912.000 tones. Koza Gold Operations has completed new sampling, geo-physics and drilling planning in the region.
