Formula Contractors

British Columbia-based construction company, Formula Contractors, has been an integral part of Western Canadian construction industry since 1977.  Formula Contractors specialises in heavy civil construction with a focus on bridges, earth work, road work, foundations, structures, material handling and renewable and non renewable energy projects ranging from mines to wind farms.

Forging into the west is what Formula does best. Currently, the company is undertaking four projects with the British Columbian Ministry of Transportation (MoT), primarily in the North-Western and Peace regions of British Columbia. One such project was particularly challenging because of the terrain. Formula Contractors worked together with MoT to engineer a site specific process that involved drilling piles with a construction drill into solid rock.  Unique project specific solutions are a testament to the breadth of experience of the Formula team.

Although their core forces have been kept busy this year, Formula Contractors has not been immune to the effects of the economic crisis. Because of the nature of the business, the construction industry is traditionally looked upon by analysts as a measure for broader economic productivity. The global financial situation resulted in a slower year for Formula in 2008, but there has always been a constant flow of work, albeit shy of the potential capacity the company can bear. Nevertheless, the coming year is already appearing to be favourable to their campaign for continued growth.

Taking past experience and realizing the potential slow down in the forestry resource sector in British Columbia, the management of Formula saw the need to diversify as quickly as possible to sustain growth.  As such, Formula was involved in the first ever wind farm in British Columbia, the Bear Mountain Wind Farm project in Dawson Creek, BC. The project was massive in scale and included the installation of 34 wind turbine generators foundations and associated civil works on the Bear Mountain ridge top. Taking past experience and realizing the potential slow down in the forestry resource sector in British Columbia, the management of Formula saw the need to diversify as quickly as possible to sustain growth.  To summarize the project, Formula supplied approximately 14,000m3 of concrete using an onsite batch plant, placed more than 1,250 tonnes of reinforced steel, moved more than 100,000 cubic meters of earth/ granular products and completed the project more than eight months earlier than required with a no time lost, zero accident safety record.

It is Formula’s ability to diversify in order to meet their client’s requirements which enables the company to grow. Formula Contractors has expanded to 80 employees and two branches since the early 1980s and has become a reliable and experienced provider of construction services to the resourced-based sector. Traditionally, Formula had installed foundation piling for mill upgrades, bridges, mines and railways in British Columbia and Alberta. Now Formula Contractors has grown to be a more comprehensive and full service contracting service.  The ability to manage several projects in various phases of development and disciplines has positioned Formula as a leader in the construction industry.

According to Formula’s management team, the company focus on safety has contributed to their sustained success.

“Last year we had 60 000 man hours accident free on two individual projects,” they explain.

The commitment of providing a safe work environment is what he credits attracting the best and most skilled workers. Formula Constructors prides itself on being accountable to both its clients and employees; employees are COR Certified and Safe Companies Certified.

“Our biggest asset is our people no doubt,” management continues.

“Everyone in our company has a contribution and can speak directly to our president or project manager. That constant input results in us getting our jobs done in the most effective way and it’s the reason we get our jobs done on time and on budget.”
