25 killed in illegally-operating mine when blaze broke out, China
IRJ Mar 16 - Late on the night of Monday, March 15, a fire in a coal mine in Central China claimed the lives of 25 miners. The fire took place at the Dongxing Coal Mining Company mine in Xinmi, near Zhengzhou. Reports indicate that the blaze was started by faulty cabling within the main pit.
To date, six miners have escaped the flames and three mine managers have been arrested by the Chinese police. The arrestees have had their assets seized and it is rumoured that the mine has been operating illegally, according to an initial investigation.
The rescue effort continues.
