Euro Energy Commissioner wants U.S.-style deepwater drilling ban; O&G industry

IRJ July 9 - Hot on the heels of tightening offshore drilling regulation is the
U.S., the European Energy Commissioner, Günther Oettinger, has requested a
moratorium on deepwater drilling. Unsurprisingly, this has inspired outrage from
much of the oil industry, including IRJ’s interviewee Malcolm Webb, CEO of
Oil & Gas UK, who called this decision “deeply concerning.”
“The idea that the European Commission should be seeking to control the
affairs of the UK offshore safety division quite frankly concerns me,”
Webb remarked.
