The company plans to set up a nuclear power plant in the east coast of India and is eyeing uranium for the plant. The nuclear power plant will be the first in India after the Indo-US nuclear deal was signed. India and Namibia were in agreements to work together in exploring mineral resources, including uranium. This would be direct competition to major mining companies like Rio Tinto. After the signed agreement NALCO joined forces with Hindustan Copper to acquire a copper mine in Africa, but the deal fell through when the mine owner, Weatherly International, withdrew the sale offer.
