South African Mining Company, Exxaro, in talks about wage strike

IRJ Aug 31 - Exxaro, South African mining company based in Johannesburg has planned a talk with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to mediate a wage strike that started on 23 August.

The company said they would maintain a pay rise of 8 percent for workers, but the NUM has rejected the deal. Miners from the mineral sands unit are demanding a 14 percent pay raise.

Exarro will hold talks on Wednesday regarding the strike.

A spokesperson said to Reuter’s "Exxaro believes that a strike is not the way to resolve matters, which can rather be resolved by means of constructive engagement."

In conjunction with the mineral sands strike is another strike led by Rio Tinto-BHP titanium joint venture, which began Friday.

Lesiba Seshoka, a spokeswoman for the NUM said, "A decision might be taken between tomorrow and Wednesday as to when a national strike at the companies begins."
