U.K. DECC green lights 1,600MW biomass and gas projects
IRJ – October 31 –The U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) approved approximately 1,600 megawatts worth of new biomass and gas-fired power plant projects, Monday, in a move that the nation’s Energy Minister, Charles Hendry, says serve as “further example of our determination to clear the back-log of planning applications, to stimulate growth and enhance our energy security”.
The total quoted comprises of a 1,500 megawatt gas-fired plant, bound for construction north of Doncaster, northern England, and a 108 megawatt biomass and waste power plant at Ferrybridge near Pontefract. The nation’s government says that the projects will spear £1.2 billion in investment, generate 1,000 jobs and power in the region of two million residences.
“The energy industry can be a real driver of growth across the country,” Hendry stated.
“These new plants in Yorkshire are a fantastic example of new power stations bringing new jobs".
The gas-fired plant will be handled by Acorn Power Developments at a cost of £984 million, and is expected to create 800 jobs. The biomass plant’s £250m incinerator is under the charge of Scottish utility group SSE. The DECC also recently granted project approval to power major, Drax, for two 229 megawatt biomass plants nearby.
