Vedanta goes up against bauxite mine neighbouring tribe

IRJ Mar 17 - The much-debated work of Vedanta Mining has hit another snag in the form of the Dongria Kondh tribe, Niyamgiri Hills of Orissa, who have gathered at the hilltop to battle against the mining company’s plans to extract 80 million tonnes of bauxite ore for much-needed processing at its Vedanta Alumina refinery (VAL) in Lanjigarh, located at the foot of the Niyamgiri Hills. The refinery capacity stands at one million tonnes, making this bauxite both necessary and ideally located for Vedanta’s operations.

The company states that its work in the vicinity will not disrupt a single member of the thousands of Dongria Kondh tribes people who have voiced their resentment, and adds that only 390.25 hectares of the 672.018 hectares of forest available for mining project work will be used.
