SNOS

Pioneering in petrochemicals
IRJ last spoke with SNOS in November last year, and now we feel it’s time to take another look at how this pioneering company continues to pave the way for future development in Russia’s petrochemical fold; introducing (SNOLEN as) SNOS’s priority project; its quest to become Russia’s first and only producer of suspension HDPE (high density polyethylene).

Forming SNOS: a host of products and promise

Salavatnefteorgsintez JSC (SNOS), was founded in 1948, and known as the Petrochemical Industrial Complex No. 18 until 1993. The company’s major businesses embrace production and sales of refined products, petrochemicals and mineral fertilizers. The company’s host of bulk commercial products includes over 70 items including automotive gasolines, diesel fuels, kerosenes, fuel oils, toluene, liquefied gases, butyl alcohols, ammonia, urea, polyethylene, polystyrenes, sulphur and great variety of plastic household goods to name just a few.

The industrial complex of Salavatnefteorgsintez JSC consists of five plants: the oil refinery—producing oil products, feedstock for bitumens, benzene, toluene; the chemical plant—home to high performance special fuels and zeolites; the monomer plant—where many different products are made, including benzene, ethyl benzene, styrene, ethylene, propylene, butyl and isobutyl alcohols, DOP plasticizer, polystyrenes of various grades; the gas and chemical plant—for phthalic anhydride, urea, ammonia; and the repair and maintenance plant—for the repair and production of heat exchange devices and non-standard equipment.

SNOS is among the top three largest petrochemical companies of Russia and is one of the major producers of butyl alcohols, gasoline, ethylene, propylene, polyethylene and other petrochemical products. This snapshot of its product offerings alone demonstrates quite how diverse a range the company is dealing with.

SNOLEN as SNOS’s priority project

As far back as 1962, the first USSR’s LDPE (low density polyethylene) production facility was put into operation ahead of schedule at the Industrial Complex No. 18. In 2010, the Bashkir petrochemical complex remains in first place. Thanks to Hostalen, one of the best world technologies of its kind, Salavatnefteorgsintez JSC is going to become the only Russian producer of suspension HDPE (high density polyethylene) including 100 (HMCRP100) pipe grades. This again exemplifies the company’s ability and inclination to be a market-leader.

The company’s Development Programme was approved in 2004. Within this was stipulated construction of 120,000 t/y suspension HDPE unit. It was a strategic decision simply due to the fact that this product generally outperforms LDPE and has a wider range of applications.

Prior to the Programme, consumers had two restricted choices: They could either buy the product abroad or use other grades of PE that could not provide for high performance end products which in its turn resulted in their lower strength and shorter service life.

Nowadays, Hostalen as one of the world’s leading technologies can promote the Bashkir company in its quest to become the first producer of suspension HDPE including 100 (HMCRP100) pipe grades in Russia. This is the reason behind the projects required RUB 6.3 billion in investments; an aspect which is considered unique.

The initial steps in the project implementation were making a Hostalen license agreement with Basell Polyolefine (Germany) and concluding a contract with TECNIMONT (Italy) for engineering, materials and equipment supply, installation supervision and consulting services.

The new facility occupies the area of 5.4 ha. Additionally, it is important to consider the likelihood of future site expansion and the increase of output from 120,000 to 180,000 t/y in order to simultaneously produce various grades of HDPE.

Around 20 contractors took part in the construction works; expatriate experts from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and India provided constant supervision at the site (Shop No. 20 of the Monomer Plant).

Making it to manufacturing: SNOS in 2010

In March, 2010, the first HDPE lot of 200 tons was manufactured. The Quality Control Department testified that the new HDPE conformed to both all SNOLEN 7260/Z501 requirements and the quality standards adopted by the company. As soon as all guarantee tests are completed, the company intends to launch commercial production using the SNOLEN trademark.

Starting up of the new facility will help SNOS to increase its share in the polymer feedstock market and downstream output in order to enhance processing of the ethylene yielded by the company’s EP-300 unit.

In total, SNOS plans to manufacture over 30 grades of high-performance PE. The variety of grades will involve all HDPE applications, such as injection molding, blow molding of large and small articles, film, raffia, single fiber and pipes.

The new products are primarily oriented at import substitution. It is already possible to say that the assortment and quality of Salavat HDPE meeting international standards will be on a par with imported counterparts.

It comes as no surprise to discover the HDPE application plans SNOS has in motion, when you look at quite how much the company has achieved since its inception back in 1948. Drawing on experts throughout Europe and seemingly effortlessly acquiring the necessary licensing and approval to move this project along, things continue to come along swimmingly at SNOS, one of Russia’s most prestigious petrochemical companies today.
